Native American Unit- Sand Painting

Today we are working on Native American Sand paintings. We found some great resources on the history of sand painting.

Native American Art
Navajo Sand Painting

What you will need:

  1. Construction Paper or Cardboard.
  2. Scissors
  3. Tempura Paint
  4. Craft Sand

What We Did

  1. First, we looked up pictures of traditional sand art paintings. We found a printable picture of a horse that we used as inspiration for our sand art painting.
You can find this printable coloring sheet here.

2. Next, we drew our outline on our construction paper.

3. While Rapunzel was drawing her outline, I mixed up the sand with tempura paint.

I used art sand.

I mixed the sand with Crayola Tempura Paint.

This is what the paint looked like after it was mixed. The paint should not be overly thick.

4. Rapunzel used the paints to fill in her design.
